How does Beta thalassemia affect dental management?
Readiness: For transfusion-dependent or symptomatic disease, coordinate with hematology on hemoglobin, transfusion timing, chelation, and cardiac/liver function. A transfusion date alone does not establish readiness for surgery
Infection: Asplenic patients need prompt assessment of infection. Discuss prophylaxis for invasive care with the physician; asplenia is an AAPD consideration for individualized coverage, not an automatic regimen
Anesthesia: Cardiac complications of iron overload may affect anesthesia and sedation planning
Occlusion: Interceptive orthodontics may help; coordinate with craniofacial care
Prevention: Prevention to avoid infection and invasive procedures
