Inherited defects in adrenal steroid synthesis, most often 21-hydroxylase deficiency, cause variable cortisol deficiency, mineralocorticoid deficiency, and androgen excess. Classic salt-wasting disease can cause life-threatening adrenal crisis. Nonclassic disease may have preserved cortisol function and does not imply the same replacement needs.
